queen of the jukebox

to say the least, dinah washington is fascinating. between her don't mess with mama attitude, gin drinking, gentlemen callers and mink stolls, she puts any current diva to shame. her vocal intensity would out-quake her sidemen...at some point in their careers that included the likes cannonball adderley, milt jackson, junior mance, and charles mingus among many.

bamboo blues

more interested in what moves people, rather than how people move, pina bausch and her tanztheater wuppertal returns to BAM december 11-20.

i think pina bausch is one of the most intruiging beings on this earth. simply beautiful. her collage style choreography is an avalanche of folly, desperation, stamina, and love.

electric junkyard gamelan

gamelan music is traditional to indonesia...in my musical learning, most specifically bali. as a continuation of my first blog, and homage to all strange sounds: i bring you electric junkyard gamelan, new york's conception of the heavily percussive art. the most beautiful concept in gamelan music is that all the instruments are built and tuned to stay together - instruments from other gamelan [bands, i guess you could say] cannot be integrated.

catch electric junkyard gamelan at barbes (9th street at 6th avenue, bklyn) august 20 @ 8pm.

iannis xenakis

known for his mathematical approach to composition and particularly revered for his developments in electronic and computer music of the 1950s. xenakis, who was also an architect, would draw upon theories in algebra, game theory, probability, and group theory to compose...but it wasn't the intention for the listener to be aware of formulas used for his sound art. one of his most famous compositions, "metastasis" , is based upon the architecture of the pavillion phillips in brussels (which he also designed) .

the miller theater will be presenting iannis xenakis' only opera, "Orestia" september 13-17...incorporating dance, noh theather, and multimedia projections.
